🎉 February Member of the Month: John Fernandez! 🎉

KSCF is proud to recognize John Fernandez as our February Member of the Month! John’s dedication to his training, consistency in classes, and commitment to building strength through accessory work have made him a standout member of our community. His upbeat attitude brings great energy to every session, and he’s always eager to take in coaching cues and put them into action.

John’s internal drive and disciplined approach to his fitness journey truly embody the spirit of KSCF. And this month is extra special—John is celebrating his 2nd anniversary at KSCF! We’re lucky to have him as part of our community, and we can’t wait to see him continue crushing his goals.

👏 Congrats, John! Keep up the amazing work! 👏

Most of my athletic background consisted of running. I’ve never been very confident when it comes to sports or my strength and physique, but one thing I did feel confident in was my running ability. In my prime, I was running about 20 miles a week and full speed was hitting under six minute miles. During Covid, I set a goal for myself to get back into exercising and start attending a gym, which lacked direction in terms of specific muscle and skill development but I was consistent.

At one of my past jobs, one of the directors was heavily involved in crossfit and eventually set up an informal crossfit session for us all to work out after work. This mainly consisted of bodyweight exercises just in the parking lot garage next to our building, but it piqued my interest and started my CrossFit journey. After searching for potential gyms, I came across KSCF and was very interested in starting and quickly set up a class to try it out. I left that morning with bloody calluses that took weeks to heal, a sore back from poor snatch form, and a headache that sent me straight to bed. Though it was a very rough start,

Since being a part of KSCF, I’ve gotten much stronger, lost over 20 pounds, and have developed more confidence in various movements/lifts. My favorite WODs would need to be any endurance-based ones. I like these types of WODs as it forces us to think about how we expend energy, teaches us how to regulate ourselves, and it feels amazing once it's finally over. My least favorite movements would have to be anything using the rig. I’m still trying to figure out the correct form and technique for my body and the calluses definitely aren’t making it easy (we will get there!). As I’ve been improving my lifting techniques, I’m hoping to set several new personal records this year. Another goal for me is improving my flexibility in order to retain a full range of movement and push my capabilities (back bends? splits?).

Post-WODs, I try to recover with high protein snacks/shakes, bananas for potassium, and a balanced dinner. Outside of crossfit, I take dance classes at the Dance Complex in Central Square, like to cook new recipes and love the occasional videogame. This month I am celebrating my two year anniversary since joining KSCF and am truly grateful for the coaches and community that have made it a comfortable space to learn and grow.   <3
